associated with the disorder. This article will cover some of the most common myths about acne and then give the factual answer.

The first myth is that acne does not need treatment because it will clear up on its’ own. While it is true that over time acne will clear up it should still be treated. Treating acne will shorten the time it takes for it to go away and it will lessen the chance of it reappearing. Treatment will also lessen any permanent damage to the skin such as scarring. The second myth is that dirty skin causes acne. Actually dirty skin does not cause acne. Scrubbing your skin too much or too hard is not recommended since it can worsen the condition. When you clean the areas of your body that are affected by acne, you should wash it gently and dab it dry. You should do this two to three times a day.

Another myth is that stress causes acne. The truth of the matter is that there is no evidence that stress directly causes acne. However, stress can cause chemical reactions in the body that can make acne worse. The next myth is that food causes acne. The truth is the same as stress that food has not been proven to be a direct cause of acne but certain foods can worsen or lessen the severity and duration of acne. Another misconception is that exposure to the sun can dry the skin therefore helping acne. The fact is that while there is proof positive that long-term exposure to the sun is harmful to the skin there is no proof that it cures or even lessens acne.

The biggest myth of all is that only teenagers suffer from acne. The truth is that anyone at any age can have acne. Changes in hormones caused by puberty, menopause, pregnancy and certain medications can all lead to acne in anyone. The worse myth is that you can get rid of acne by squeezing pimples. The truth is that squeezing and picking at pimples is a sure way to cause permanent scarring. Lastly, it is believed that make-up will not affect acne one way or the other. The truth is that almost all make-up will cause an adverse reaction to acne. There are cosmetics available that can be used with acne.
